Oh, What's in a Name?Shakespeare's Romeo put it best...Oh, what's in a name? A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet. Today, we are reading an excerpt from The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros titled "My Name". Before we do, let us prepare our minds for what this passage may teach us about the importance and significance of names. To start off, let's consider Romeo's words from Romeo and Juliet. In today's passage, the narrator starts off by sharing what her name means in English as well as what it means in Spanish. What does your name mean? Begin by thinking about what you know about your name. Maybe you were named after a family member, or it was your mother's favorite name. Next, think about what your name means to you. What ideas come to mind when you hear your name? Finally, head on over to Behind the Name, a neat search engine that will search the web for your name's meaning. Get there by clicking on the link below. Share your answers to these questions in a single comment, and check out what your classmates have to share about their name, too. Let them know what you think by commenting on their comment.
If you could rename yourself, what new name would you choose and why? If not, why would you hang onto your original name? Let us know by commenting below, and again, tell at least one person what you think about their comment by commenting to them. When you're all set, click on the link to today's reading selection above (I've included it below, also...just in case). See you on the other side.
